I grew up on the coast of Maine. My family fished at high tide and dug for clams at low tide. My neighbors were lobster men. I really can't recall my parents ever buying seafood when I was a child ! We had a 38 foot sailboat. Sailing up and down the coastline always brought interesting ports to visit, people to meet and sightings of marine life. Life on the water was good.
So when I started taking cruises, I saw it as just another way to be on the water.
Until I found myself on a maiden voyage of the Cunard Queen Mary 2 in January of 2004. The first ocean liner to be built in half a century, she embodied everything you could imagine about a classic transatlantic crossing. I was in awe of it all! Her deep black hull cutting the water, her massive smoke stack, wrap around teak wood decks, glorious staircase into the Britannia Dining Room and impressive collection of British maritime artifacts and royal crown jewels displayed throughout made me feel like I was living in the Golden Era of Ocean Voyages. This was a totally new experience.
The ultimate moment came at 3:30 pm on a day at sea. There I was, sitting in the Queen's Room ballroom for afternoon tea. My table was adorned with white linen table cloth and napkins, fine china and silverware. The scones with jam, crumpets, fresh fruit and tiny scrumptious dessert squares were served from sterling silver trays by waiters wearing white gloves. A string quartet dressed in black gowns and tuxedos performed softly from the stage. Tea with sugar cubes and clotted cream anyone?
That's when it hit me: The journey is a destination in and of itself! My passion for the sea merged with the pleasure of luxury surroundings and first class service. This was cruising as it is meant to be.
Today, I work one-on-one with clients who want to enjoy the journey as much as the destination. My specialty is helping my clients see the world from the vantage of luxury cruising.
